Cerritos Captures State Dual Championship

The #1 ranked Cerritos Falcons made the most of their first visit to the CCCAA State Dual Championships since 1993 by besting the host Fresno City Rams 23-16.

The see-saw battle highlighted each teams strengths. The Rams jumped out to a 13-0 lead on the efforts of their light weights, Gaytan, Mora and McAlestar. The 149 match proved to be the turning point of the dual. #3 Wyatt Gerl (Cerritos) and #1 ranked Dylan Martinez (Fresno City) squared off in a true battle of wills. Martinez spent most of his time fighting off Gerl’s relentless attacks but was unable to avoid taking an injury time at a the end of regulation. Wyatt started the overtime in the down position and earned a reversal for the 2-0 win that turned the tide for the Falcons. The upper portion of the Falcon line-up is their strength and was a mountain to big for the Rams to climb. Entering the the 197 match Fresno was holding on to a slim 16-15 lead and looking for some magic vs #1 Van Weems (197) and #2 Zavala (285). Van Weems used a barrage of takedowns for the tech-fall, giving the Falcons a lead they would not relinquish.

197 Pounds – David Van Weems (CERR) by major decision vs Kalvin Stuckey (FCC), 27-11
285 Pounds – David Zavala (CERR) by decision vs Angel Mariscal (FCC), 2-1
